Our resource page is here to provide you with updated information on getting into vet school and what you need to do now as an undergraduate student. Preparing as An Undergraduate
How to Prepare in High School
- Gain a solid background in math and science.
- Take part in extracurricular activities (athletics, school clubs, FFA, etc)
- Study and maintain a high GPA and high SAT/ACT scores.
- Acquire as much experience with pets as possible. Consider volunteering at your local humane society or with a local veterinarian.
- Take a pre-vet or comparable curriculum, that is, one that includes math and several science courses such as biology and chemistry.
- Maintain a high GPA
- Gain as much broad exposure to veterinary medicine as possible. Consider job shadowing with veterinarians, scientists, working on a farm or volunteering at an animal shelter.
- Join a Pre-Vet club.
The Application Process
Now you're in your undergraduate studies pushing through most of your classes and gaining so much animal experience. What do you do now? It is now time to apply! Applying for veterinary school is done through a centralized application service through the Veterinary Medical College Application Service (VMCAS). The 2020-2021 VMCAS Application Cycle is now closed for this year. It will reopen in January 2021. Preparing for your application is one the first steps you'll need to take on the journey to become a veterinarian.
Standardized Exams
The GRE or Graduate Record Examinations is a standardized test that is a requirement for admission into most veterinary schools. It is administered by the Educational Testing Service. The link below has more information for registration and future dates for the upcoming year.
