Outstanding Club Community Service Awards
Centenary University
The Centenary University Pre-Professional Club was founded in 2015 by several pre-veterinary students and has since grown to over 25 members, becoming the most active club on campus. We have created and sold equine emergency kits all over the east coast consisting of a stethoscope, thermometer, Epsom salt, vet wrap, Vaseline, antibiotic ointment, alcohol and more. At our “Throw Me A Bone” fundraiser during family weekend, family members decorated paper bones for $1.00. With these funds, the club purchased three oxygen mask kits equipped for animals for the local fire department to be used on their firetrucks/ambulances. Members regularly volunteer at a wildlife center near campus feeding baby squirrels and have donated new pitchforks, shovels and brooms to the rescue. Most recently, the club created ~100 dog toys out of old towels and donated them to a local shelter for Christmas. The club has taken field trips to Aqua Dog Rehab Center, BW Furlong Equine Surgical Center/Soundness Center, numerous small/exotic animal hospitals, Six Flags Animal Safari, Cape May Zoo, University of Pennsylvania CVM, Cornell University CVM, and NCSU CVM to gain experience and learn more about the application process. Members participate in community events at a local church each year by creating games to teach children about different animals. The club has also held events such as our annual Anatomy Bowl, suturing lab, blood typing lab, and has had various guest speakers in different fields of veterinary medicine come in to lecture. We have worked very hard this year and are honored to receive this award!
Delaware Valley University
The Delaware Valley University Pre-Vet Club was established between 2010 and 2011. We became members of the APVMA in 2013 and became more active in community service last year. Our executive team decided at last year's National Symposium that we would work exceptionally hard to try and achieve the APVMA's Outstanding Club Community Service Award. Once this goal was set, we became very involved with the Lehigh County Humane Society and our local 4-H chapter. We also began participating in the Relay For Life and organized a campus-wide charity event that allowed students to raise money for non-profits around the country. Ourclub and the Campus Community are very proud of the Pre-Vet Club's achievements. We want to thank our advisor as well as all the individuals that supported us and look forward to expanding our community service efforts in the future.
Outstanding Senior Awards
Samantha Frosch
Centenary University
My name is Samantha Frosch and I’m currently a senior double majoring in biology and equine science at Centenary University in New Jersey. I am the founder and president of the Pre-Professional Club, a member of TriBeta Honor Society, Golden Key Honor Society and an admissions tour guide. I attended the Tufts Adventures in Veterinary Medicine Program and Cornell Veterinary Exploration Program in high school. I just completed and presented my research on the population abundance of indigenous bat species on Long Island at the ICFNJ Undergraduate Research Symposium. I will also be presenting my research on the psychological risk factors that affect an individual’s decision to participate in a clinical trial and the willingness of a pet owner to enroll their pet in a clinical trial at the end of April. I currently work as a small animal veterinary assistant, an animal caretaker at the Long Island Zoo, and shadow our equine veterinarian on staff at Centenary. I have wanted to be a veterinarian all my life and my dreams are finally coming true. I am very excited to attend North Carolina State College of Veterinary Medicine in the fall as an out of state student. I aspire to become a mixed practice veterinarian, become board certified (not sure in what yet!) and teach at a veterinary or graduate school.

Julia Carlin
University of Central Florida
Hello! I'm Julia Carlin; an inspired, dedicated and resilient individual aspiring to be a great veterinarian. I am a junior at the University of Central Florida studying biology with a 4.0 GPA. I am involved in the Biology Department’s Coastal and Estuarine Ecology Lab and am currently conducting two independent research projects; one investigating microplastic identification and abundance in birds of prey and another examining the effect of seagrass wrack on mangrove propagules. I was awarded ‘Outstanding Student Presentation’ at the 2018 Indian River Lagoon Research Conference. Currently, I serve on the executive board for UCF’s Pre-Veterinary Society and tutor pre-veterinary students in organic chemistry. My favorite internship experiences were at the Central Florida Zoo working with giraffes and at the Lake Worth Animal Clinic, working with both companion and exotic animals such as jaguars and lemurs. In my internships, I worked alongside the veterinarians in procedures including enucleation, acupunctures, spays and neuters. I am the research director and a founding member of the student organization, Green Greeks, which aims to decrease food insecurity by planting organic, sustainable gardens and donating the produce to the campus’s food shelter. I plan to attend veterinary school, specialize in radiology and continue research.

Purdue University
Hello! My name is Yufan Chao. I am in the class of 2018 at Purdue University majoring in
Animal Sciences, with a Pre-Veterinary Medicine concentration. I also have minors in
Biological Sciences, Wildlife Science and Economics. I am honored to join the class of
2022 of North Carolina State University’s DVM program in August 2018. Growing up in a
city in China, I have experienced severe lack of proper veterinary care and irresponsible
ownership with animals, which stimulated my passion to contribute to this situation. While remaining a strong academic standing, I have been actively involved in many community service events. I have also done research in Dr. Kim’s Meat Science and Muscle Biology lab for 2 years. During my 3 weeks of studying abroad in Romania, I conducted projects to improve milk quality of a rural Romanian village. Moreover, I gained various veterinary experience through volunteering and working in Purdue Veterinary Teaching Hospital’s gait lab, oncology, cardiology, orthopedic surgery, and large animal departments. My leadership roles in different clubs, such as Purdue Pre-Vet Club and University Residence Global Club, enhanced my organizational skills and impacted many of my colleagues.
