Kellie Rizzolo
Michigan State University

Kellie is a senior Production Animal Scholar at MSU and will be attending Michigan State’s veterinary school this fall to become a bovine practitioner. She is the current President of the Michigan State chapter of PVMA, and she is also involved in the Michigan Cattlemen’s Association, the MSU College of Agriculture and Natural Resources Student Senate, the American Society of Animal Scientists, is a registered professional animal scientist for ARPAS, and was a lifelong 4-H member. Kellie has been extensively involved in production animal research, where she worked with the soil-plant-animal continuum in Nepalese water buffalo, and is now analyzing genetic traits influencing the sale price of performance tested beef bulls in Michigan. Despite growing up in the small town of Stockbridge, Michigan, she received the Presidential Service Award for her volunteer work in South Africa and Swaziland, and she hopes to continue her work abroad by advancing African livestock systems as a veterinarian to simultaneously protect livestock, ranchers, and the endangered predators that hunt them.

Christina Miller
Grand Valley State University

I am the president of the Pre-Veterinary Medicine Club at Grand Valley State University. At GVSU, I am pursuing my degree in Biology with a pre-veterinary emphasis. Along with school, I work as a veterinary assistant at Great Lakes Hospital for Animals. Outside of school and work, I love spending time with my 3 dogs, 2 cats, and my 2 boys, Anderson and Jenson. I served as the Grand Valley State University Chair for the APVMA Midwest Regional Symposium. Along with Hope College, we planned an event for college students and high school students in Michigan that wanted to get a taste of what symposium is like. In the future, I would like to be either a mixed practice or equine vet and work with rescue horses.

I have been incredibly blessed to work alongside animal welfare advocates and veterinary professionals from around the world
interested in improving the lives of animals, public health, and the environment. I will be heading to veterinary school this fall, and I truly believe that a well rounded experience is just as important as stellar grades in demonstrating one's dedication and passion for veterinary medicine. I am so grateful to be receiving this scholarship, which will offset a portion of the costs associated with veterinary education. Thank you APVMA!

I have been part of The Pre-Veterinary Circle during my four years of college, three of them serving as a member of the executive board. For the last two years I have been elected as President of the association. I’ve always had a passion for helping and for animals which is why I joined the association. Other than my work in the club I also participate in a foundation composed of students were we rescue, foster and find homes for stray animals. I aspire to become a wildlife veterinarian and work with conservation and endangered animals.

Samantha Frosch
Centenary University

My name is Samantha Frosch and I'm currently a sophomore at Centenary University in New Jersey. I am a double major in biology and equine science with a minor in chemistry. I am the founder and president of the Pre-Professional Club, a member of Tribeta Honor Society and Golden Key Honor Society, a peer tutor for general biology, and an admissions tour guide. I am conducting research on the psychological risk factors that affect decisions to place pets in a clinical trial or allow treatment in hopes to be able to give veterinarians a better way to approach those tricky clients that are less willing to give their pets the treatment they need. I have been shadowing at animal hospitals since I was 14 and have attended both the Tufts Adventures in Veterinary Medicine Program and the Cornell Cooperative Center Veterinary Exploration Program. I work as a veterinary assistant at Bayport Bluepoint Animal Hospital at home on Long Island, New York every summer and break. I also get to shadow our resident equine veterinarian and board certified surgeon at school. This upcoming summer I am so excited to also be working in the nursery at the Long Island Zoo and Game Farm. I own three horses and have been riding since I was 5. I aspire to own my own mixed practice one day

These scholars were selected for demonstrating leadership and participation within their club and other school/community activities!
Outstanding Community Service Awardees

This award is for APVMA member pre-veterinary clubs. The award is based on how well each club has helped to promote and stimulate interest in veterinary medicine within their community. This award was granted to Club Animalia from Hope College and to the University of Puerto Rico in Mayaguez's pre-vet organization!
Picture
Club Animalia of Hope College
Club Animalia began in 2006 and has grown to include about 25 members. The club is dedicated to promoting the human-animal bond, community service, and animal-based community education through both pre-vet and non pre-vet students. In addition, we aim to provide resources and information to members that are interested in an animal based career.

The West Michigan Regional APVMA Symposium was a joint effort between Club Animalia and Grand Valley State University's Pre-vet club. Each school's Chair worked with Club Animalia's Advisors Dr. Greg and Dr. Susan Fraley to see the event to fruition. We aimed to have a symposium that was styled after the National APVMA Symposium that would reach both local high school and college students. Students attended both labs and lectures throughout the day. They were also able to hear from speakers Hilda Mejia Abreu, MS, PhD the Assistant Dean of Admission and Scholarship at Michigan State University's College of Veterinary Medicine, as well as Tony Wynne, Director of Admissions & Recruitment Affairs for the Association of American Veterinary Medical Colleges.

University of Puerto Rico in Mayaguez
The Pre-Veterinary Circle from the University of Puerto Rico in Mayagüez, focuses mainly on the care and wellbeing of animals. Our goal is to stimulate aspiring veterinarians to take part in the improvement of their community. We accomplish this mainly with community service. Some of the community service we do includes visiting animals shelters and sanctuaries all over the island, providing an annual low cost vaccination clinic, volunteer work in the Manatee Conservatory, volunteer work in a local dairy farm and helping the stray animal population in Puerto Rico by rescuing, fostering and finding homes for these animals.
